How to stay afloat financially and physically in the summer

Hey FitnanceIQ family! So this is a dear post to me because it’s putting the best of both worlds together as one. Summer is almost over, the days are getting shorter, and the mosquitoes are still out. Yup, that’s the wondering feeling of summer (minus the shattered showers here or there); however, it’s also the time when some people’s spending habits go high and physical activities go low.

Well, I’m here to help you out!

Financially

Summertime is the time of spending! We all know this, we feel like going out more with our family, friends or co-workers. We always seem to forget that our salary is still the same or less during the summertime. If you are going to spend more, you need to figure out whether you want to make more or find discounts in your city.

  • Find you a side hustle to accommodate for your lifestyle. Find a hobby you enjoy and freelance it! Do you like cooking or baking? Try catering for a small gathering. Are you good at braiding? Try to braid some family and friends hair for a fee. Do you love being around dogs? There is always a dog sitting gig or dog walking gig. Those are just to name a few. The only way to make it these days is either having a 2nd job, ability to make passive income or your own business. Choose the one that suits you.
  • If you are going to shop or go dining or doing any activities, why pay full price?!?! There are so many festivals, activities, discount apps and coupons to get a bang for your buck. During the summer there are many festivals that happen! A couple that has passed so far are Afrofest, Salsa on St. Clair, Summerlicious, Jazz festival, Caribana (Toronto carnival to the newbies), Taste of the Danforth and CNE; however, there’s still time for TIFF, Small World Music, Toronto Garlic Festival and Toronto Beer Week.
  • How about some affordable outings? Picnics or potlucks are a great way to enjoy the weather with great company. You can make a deal to spend $10-15 each and either purchase food to prepare or pre-packaged meals and drinks. Also, there are many free entertainments around your city. You just have to search for the gems in your city.

Physically

I do not know why but during the summer you are less likely to go to the gym or stay active; unless you’re a recreational athlete like me. However, this is for the individuals that are not as active as they wish.

  • How to stay active and not even realizing it. Go for a walk. Whether is getting off a bus stop or two before your original stop or going for a stroll around your neighbourhood. You would be surprised on what a 10-15 minute walk does for someone that doesn’t normally walk. It not only gives you a boost in energy and has many other benefits.
  • Now I know there is always a 50 % chance that it will rain at least 2-3 days out of the week, but you can figure out ways to utilize the outdoors. Whether it is using a bench or the park.
  • Join a recreational league or if your company has sporting events attend them.

Overall all there are so many ways to stay active! You just need to find out what works for you!!! Even though we are in the last few days of summer, these can still be used during the fall. I managed to stay afloat during the summer and accomplished more than expected!! Were y’all able to stay afloat with your finances and fitness during the summer? If not, how can we overcome it for the next season?
